Why is the subject important?

At º£½ÇÖ±²¥ the Creative iMedia curriculum will encourage our students to understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of digital media, they will be encouraged to consider the factors that influence product design, use of media codes/conventions, pre-production planning techniques, legal issues and creation/publishing/distribution. This course will provide our students with capabilities to develop learning and practical media skills that can be applied to real-life contexts and work situations. The curriculum is designed to encourage our students to think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically. It will allow our students to develop independence and confidence in using skills that would be relevant to the media industry and more widely in different industry sectors. Students will be required to design, plan, create and review digital media products which are fit for purpose meeting both client and target audience requirements.

The curriculum aims to equip students at º£½ÇÖ±²¥ with sound specialist knowledge and skills for everyday use, which will challenge all Trinity students, including high attaining learners, by introducing them to demanding materials and skills; encouraging independence and creativity; and providing tasks that engage with the most challenging aspects of the curriculum.

The iMedia course has three main areas which we aim to cover in our curriculum as this will allow students to effectively use their learning in practical, real-life situations and help our students to develop independence and confidence in using skills that would be relevant to the Media sector.

  1. Developing visual identities for clients.
  2. Planning and creating original digital graphics
  3. Planning, creating and reviewing original digital media products.

This qualification has two mandatory units and one optional unit:

At Trinity we believe the mix of coursework and an exam student are exposed to in our curriculum enables them to progress onto further study of courses A-level Media studies, apprenticeships in Media & Broadcast, Level 3 Cambridge Technicals Information Technology or Digital Media. The skills and knowledge in each component of our Creative iMedia curriculum matches the specification so that Trinity students are able to achieve the highest grades.

Year 8

What will I be studying?

  • Digital Technology TwoÌý– This unit will help students build essential digital skills and learn how to stay safe online. They will start by getting to know the school network, creating secure passwords, and learning the rules for using the computing lab. The unit will then cover how to communicate online respectfully, including writing proper emails and understanding the risks and benefits of online relationships. Students will learn the difference between data and information, explore how companies use personal data, and understand the importance of privacy. The lessons will also introduce students to the risks of social engineering and hacking, teaching them how to protect themselves and understand the legal implications. Finally, students will explore different ways to protect networks from cyber threats and write a report on how to manage these risks in school. Overall, this unit aims to equip students with practical skills and knowledge for safe and responsible digital use.

 

  • Creative GraphicsÌý– This unit offers students the opportunity to design graphics using vector graphic editing software and to also design moving animations within the open-source software Wick Editor. Vector Graphics: Vector graphics can be used to design anything from logos and icons to posters, board games, and complex illustrations. Through this unit, students will be able to better understand the processes involved in creating such graphics and will be provided with the knowledge and tools to create their own. Students will be using Adobe Illustrator which is an industry standard software. Animations: Students will be given the chance to explore different industries and media products where animations can be used. Through this unit, students will be able to better understand the processes involved in creating such graphics and will be provided with the knowledge and tools to create their own using the open-source software Wick Editor. They will focus of using objects, tweening and interactions.

  • Developing for the webÌý– This unit has been developed to allow the students to further develop their digital graphics skills. This unit offers students the opportunity to design graphics using photo manipulation software – photoshop. Students will understand the differences between bitmap and vector images. They will be given the opportunity to refine/edit photographs using a range of tools within photoshop. In the latter lessons students will be given the opportunity to consolidate their understanding and create a DVD front cover using the skills that they have acquired throughout the skills builder lessons.

  • Computing Carousel: 12 week block studying iDEA which is an international programme that helps you develop digital, enterprise and employability skills for free. Students will take part in a series of online challenges, you can win career-enhancing badges, unlock new opportunities and, ultimately, gain industry recognised awards that help you stand out from the crowd.
  • Online Challenges are presented as badges, CITIZEN, WORKER, MAKER and ENTREPRENEUR which are divided into categories for different types of skills, DIGITAL SAFETY, MEDIA and BUSNIESS Skills.

What will I be studying?

Unit R093: Creative iMedia in the media industry. This is assessed by an external exam. In this unit students will learn about the media industry, digital media products, how they are planned, and the media codes which are used to convey meaning, create impact and engage audiences. The key focus areas of this unit that we aim to cover at º£½ÇÖ±²¥ are the media industry, students will be expected to explore the different media sectors and the vast array of job opportunities available in each sector. Students will then go on to explore a range of factors which will influence their product design, they will take these considerations into account when creating pre-production products for their digital media products. Students will then explore a range of distributions considerations focussing on file formats and legislation.

Unit R094: Visual identity and digital graphics. This is assessed by completing a set assignment, set assignments will be released in June each year and are only live for 1 year. In this unit students will learn how to develop visual identities for clients and use the concepts of graphic design to create original digital graphics to engage target audiences. The key focus areas of this unit that we aim to cover at º£½ÇÖ±²¥ are developing a visual identity, students will be expected to design a visual identity for a company which will include a logo, slogan and strapline. Students will be expected to justify their design choices with links to their audience and client needs. Students will then be required to produce relevant planning documentation and identify assets which are to be used to create the visual identity. Students will then use industry standard software – Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to create their visual identity and graphic products.

Unit R097: Interactive digital media. This is assessed by completing a set assignment, set assignments will be released in June each year and are only live for 1 year.Ìý The key focus areas of this unit that we aim to cover at º£½ÇÖ±²¥ are the use of a range of planning techniques to plan an effective interactive website which will meet the needs of the diverse audience and client requirements. Students will be expected to thoroughly test and evaluate their product ensuring it is suitable for their target audience and meets the specified client needs.
